There will never be enough resources for a mind without imagination but to a daydreamer, every material, even the smallest crumble or fleck, holds great potential. Coffee Grounds have been that material for me.
So often when people think about creating, their first thought is to run to the art supply store. The best way to stretch the creative muscle however, comes not from an art store but rather from the challenge of re-combining unique ingredients at hand to form something inspirational.
Rather than holding tightly to a vision for creating, in my studio, I listen. I am a better artist when I am a keen observer and drop my own agenda.
My job as an artist is to constantly change my vantage point in order to find a new way of perceiving. My job as a teacher is to help others to find that same joy for themselves.
Coffee is such a part of our modern fast paced culture. Achieving goals and gaining momentum can sometimes overshadow the peace that can be found in the sheer presence of the senses. Tasting, smelling, hearing, feeling.
When we are fully present in the moment, present in complete gratitude, that is when the profound answers flow in.
Coffee Grounds are the essence of abundant raw materials. As a little girl, I received a bottle of glue for Christmas. Coming from a family of artists, receiving glue was thrilling, so many possibilities! Today, I use a more sophisticated “glue” to bind the coffee Grounds together but it is still the binding together of different materials that inspires me.
Whenever I pick up Grounds from our local Coffee shop, I tell the person that I am getting them from what I am using them for. It’s always fun getting their reactions. I make sure to bring them back a piece of jewelry as a thank you for the Grounds. It is such a fun way to gather art supplies! Each design is handmade with care and attention to detail in my studio in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. The design lines are always evolving, changing drastically since their inception in 2006. What will this next year bring?
Thank you you so much for your interest in my artwork and in my vision. I am so grateful for the opportunity to move creativity in the world.
